      Conference backgrounder
Industry-popular APCON (Asia-pacific Conference), the flagship event of International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) is back in India with a big bang after 11 years of successful tour around the globe. From the last Indian conference in Vadodara, Gujarat, in the year 2002, the development of supply chain management (SCM) has been characterized by the attention given to global supplier relationships and the expansion of supply chains over national boundaries. The businesses are now very focused on the goal of increasing their competitive advantage, value-addition and reducing costs through supply chain management.

      SCM today
Unlike the past, supply chain management today, is a critical cross-functional approach. It includes sourcing raw materials and purchased components into the organization, the internal processing of materials into finished goods and the distribution of finished goods using warehouses and retail stores to the end-customer. As global organizations across different geographies strive to focus on core competencies and becoming more flexible, they are now reducing their ownership of raw materials sources and distribution channels. These functions are increasingly being outsourced to other entities that can perform the activities better or more cost effectively. Competition is no longer viewed as between individual companies but is increasingly between the extended supply chains. As businesses look to the emerging and dynamic economies of Asia, newer challenges unfold. These force re-evaluation of current supply chain practices which need to address local, regional and global complexities. The effect is to increase the number of organizations involved in satisfying customer demand, while reducing management control of daily logistics operations. Less control and more supply chain partners are leading to the creation of unprecedented supply chain management complexities. As a result, the wider purpose of supply chain management has been significantly altered. It is about improving trust and collaboration among supply chain partners, thus improving inventory visibility and the velocity of inventory movement… all adding up to improved customer service, reduced wastage and finally higher profitability of organizations.
